Now that Google has announced that they are going to start billing for the use of Google Maps are there any plans to integrate an alternative free API option?

Not as yet. Are there any mapping/geolocation platforms in particular that you’re interested in?

Sidenote: as I understand it, though Google will now require that billing details including a credit card are provided, there will still be a free usage tier that you can take advantage of.

I think launching a Google Maps alternative based on Bing Maps or similar should be a great opportunity for plugin developers to gain a huge amount of users. I don’t think everybody’s interested in all Google Maps features, but location and street names. For example, a “Contact Us” or “Where to find Us” page, present in almost every corporate website, just need to show a little widget with the store location and less more.
I definitely would use an alternative maps plugin instead asking all my clients to get an Google Maps account, enter billing details, and provide me their api key just to continue showing a maps widget.

Looking forward to seeing what WordPress plugin developers come up with. This is an incredible opportunity to start moving away from the insidious reliance we’ve all developed in Google API based products.

    Hi barry,

We have decided to abandon Google maps because of this change, so we’re definitely very interested in seeing enough interest expressed to encourage the addition of an alternative maps source to the Events Calendar.

I have just finished writing a plugin using Leaflet.js to build maps from a variety of OSM sources, as well as from Bing and Google (with API keys). Leaflet is really easy to work with, so i’d encourage the developers of the Events Calendar to look into it. If you want my plugin as a working example, let me know.

    Just thinking out loud here…

What about OpenCage Data (using use Open Street maps)?

Obtain an OpenCage API Key, then use that with Open Street maps. They (OpenCage Data) provide up to 2,500 requests/day 1 request/sec, which might be what Google used to offer?
