Amount exceeding stock

We have a problem when an order exceeds our stock amount.

This is a variable product, set to allow backorder but notify customer.

We have 4 in stock, but when 5 are ordered the in stock message keeps being displayed.
We do not show stock amount on the website but it should change when exceeding the current stock.
