An idea for RSS

    We all know what happens when you click on the RSS link in your WordPress blog – a page full of text. Yuck. And no instructions on how to actually use the information in front of you E.g. Cut and past url into your RSS reader etc.
    But what if?
    What if when you clicked on that RSS link it opened your default RSS reader and added the feed automatically?
    Can it be done?
    What would it take?
    Could someone write it as a plugin for WordPress?

    It would a universal movement of blog software developers and news aggregator developers, as a universal call has to be created and implemented in all blogs and new aggregators. For now, just run your feed through FeedBurner. http://feedburner.com/

    I am using NewsFire http://www.newsfirerss.com/
    But the more I think about it, I am so surprised that this has not been done earlier.
    How do we make happen what you have suggested would need to happen?

    Well, it’s not that simple. The file type as well as the file extention would have to be stnadardized, and then associated wit hyour reader (much like the way PDF files are associated with Acrobat.)
    And since there are a variety of extentions used for feeds -some site offer static xml files, others like WP use php to dynamically send the data — makes it a bigger challenge.
    It’s not as easy as it sounds…. it’s actualy quite complex.

    No, no, heh. I meant to sign up with FeedBurner and run your feed through them. When you do that, and someone clicks your RSS feed, it opens nicely and formated in your browser.
