I guess this is not a real fix, but it works 🙂 (For those with the same problem).
Appearance > theme > Add new – tab (add new) on the top is not working
So go to the same page Appearance > theme but don’t press that tab.
Look at the big pictures with the pre-installed themes. The last one will be the icon to add a new theme. This route works…
This is a curious problem Gloak because the tab on the theme page links to theme-install.php and the add new theme icon you mention links to the exact same url.
I wonder if you check to see if the problem still persists will it occur again? for curiosity’s sake it it would be interesting to know 🙂
I have been reading the blog posts regarding the “Warning: An unexpected error occurred” – with NO luck including calls to the hosting provider…
I am getting this when updating WordPress… not plugins, not themes…
Let me toss another interesting piece of data into the mix… I have five word-press sites, all manually installed. The sites that were installed a few months ago do not have the error and ALL the sites are updated to the latest version 4.0.
The most recently installed sites (in the past few weeks), including one from a 4.0 kit (clean install with no modifications), no plugins and no additional themes have the error right from the start…
All of these sites are on the same server and the same account…
This is very strange…

Did anyone find a fix for this? Because I have 3 sites and all of a sudden I have the same message when I go to the ‘Add Plugin’ page. All sites are with the same host, who have said that everything is OK at their end so it must be a WordPress problem.
Each site has a different theme and a different mix of plugins, so there are no commonalities except my host. I am really stuck.
@jetforce, the WordPress plugin system is currently down. AFAIK this is affecting all WordPress installs as well as the WordPress plugin repository at https://ww.wp.xz.cn/plugins/
Let’s hope they get it working soon!
WordPress servers are down, its not an issue with your host. I think we need to patient and wait for wordpress to fix this. I am experiencing the same problems.
The plugins system appears to be back up and functioning properly now.
It’s working on all of my sites now.
