    Hi guys,

Just reading through the changelog for the new version, and it states that:

For the images that are already optimized, you get the possibility to create the webp versions separately (one by one or in the settings page), but only if you kept a backup copy of the original images.

…so does this mean that there is no going back after swapping images to WebP – even if I end up hating it?

All the other plugins offering WebP images (well not many actually – and even the one that works wont connect to their server) – say that the choice can be rescinded at a later date.

I’ve been waiting for this upgrade for a while now, but on face value it looks a little white-elephant-ish.

    Hey @steveraven

    Thanks for your patience!

You can revert your images back anytime. I have restored one image to original and then visited a previously generated WebP version. It’s removed from the system – https://www.screencast.com/t/3WDc6O9Mdwi

You need to keep original files in backup in order to create WebP. However, you have a choice to show them or not – so even without restoring images to original, you can show a classic optimized image (JPG, PNG) and skip WebP – https://www.screencast.com/t/4BDwyxMth

Hope this helps. Let me know if you have any further questions.

Right, so according to the second screencast image, it says that allowing the re-writing of .htaccess will not work with a CDN.

    I use Cloudflare – I suppose that’s classed as a CDN?

Also, how do you revert the images back from WebP?

For info, I’m using Imagify as my image optimiser, and WP Rocket for caching.

    Hey,

This will work with basic Cloudflare functionality – this is related to CDN where your images URLs are replaced with CDN URL.

There are both JPG and WebP format for each image on your system. If you don’t want to show WebP, you can deactivate it in the settings page – https://imagify.io/documentation/wp-content/uploads/sites/2/2019/05/imagify-v-1-9-webp-e1556886067700.png

Right then, for my own piece of mind before I hit the ‘use WebP images’ button:

I’ve checked in my Imagify dashboard, and then in my hosting panel, to confirm that backups have been made. Indeed, all of these are being saved in my wp-content>>uploads folder in nice yearly sections.

Using this ‘basic Cloudflare functionality’, I’m guessing that it will now be ok to use the rewrite rules on my website – or have I read it wrong and should be using the <picture> tag method instead?

    Hi,
If you are using CloudFlare, we recommend to use picture tag method.

Yes, set it up as directed, and only the testimonials panel looks a bit out – found that I needed to set widths that belonged to thumbnails/images etc rather than using custom sizes.

A few anomalies on various web page speed tests, especially Google PSI, but I find that Google PSI gives ‘false’ and ‘lies through it’s back teeth’ readings at best.

WebP is a good addition, but hardly an outstanding one – having said that I’ll possibly come back raving about it after letting it settle in!

Just a little piece of further advice:

Could I make the aforementioned testimonials slider use normal jpg images instead of WebP ones?

For info, the testimonials slider is a WPBakery one, but I guess it would be the same for most sliders/testimonial sliders.

Also, I have a logo showcase at the bottom of my website, where one of the images is a little twitchy as to whether it renders or not.

Is it possible therefore to select individual images to show their WebP versions, whilst leaving any twitchy ones to be output as .jpg’s?

    Hi,
For now it’s not possible to do that.
There is a workaround which would be to simply delete the webp file on your FTP.
Since Imagify won’t detect the webp it won’t display it.

I got a workaround in my logo slider, by simply reverting to the original image – however that’s not possible with the testimonial slider images, as they all come up as:

This media file is already optimised, no further optimisation is required.

…which is a bit of a pain in the arse really, as this happens on many images and there’s no way to re-optimise following the above statement except to go up to ‘ultra’.

Is there no way to re-optimise images once they’ve been fully optimised?

    Hey @steveraven

Thanks a lot for your patience.

When you get this message, that usually means optimization is not processed for them.

Regarding your question ( “Is there no way to re-optimise images once they’ve been fully optimised?” ) – you can re-optimize them as you should be able to revert them to original or to another compression level.

I am not completely sure if I am not missing something from your latest message, so let me know if there is any additional information that could be useful in order to resolve the problem you experience.

    Best Regards
