Apple Pay is not available with Square

Thanks for sharing the details. To resolve the Apple Pay domain verification issue with Square, please try the following steps:

Clear your site cache – This includes any caching plugins and CDN cache.
Delete the old verification file from the .well-known directory.
Go to WooCommerce → Settings → Payments → Square and press Save.

If Apple Pay still doesn’t work, please contact your hosting provider and ask them if there is anything blocking access to the .well-known file. Sometimes server rules or security modules can prevent Apple Pay from verifying the domain.

Following these steps usually resolves the issue. If you still face the same issue, please share the System Status Report which you can find via WooCommerce > Status. Please use https://pastebin.com/ or https://gist.github.com/ and share a link to that paste in reply here. Once we have more information, we’ll be able to assist you further.

Thanks for your quick reponse. I have carried out those instructions and it’s not showing on the front end, the Square log hasn’t updated in 20 minutes so I’ll wait for that before sending you the info.

Thanks for the update. That sounds good please wait for the Square log to update, as it may take some time for changes to register. Once you have the updated log, please share it here so we can review and help troubleshoot why Apple Pay is still not showing on the front end.

In the meantime, make sure your site cache and any CDN cache remain cleared to avoid cached responses affecting the verification.

I’ve reviewed the log, and it appears that your domain is invalid or hidden. Issues like this are typically server-related because Square was unable to verify your domain, which is required for Apple Pay.

Could you contact your hosting provider to confirm whether the following file path exists:

.well-known/apple-developer-merchantid-domain-association

If it does, please ask them to ensure it is publicly accessible via HTTPS and returns a 200 OK status. You can share a screenshot of the 200 OK response with us. This isn’t an issue we can troubleshoot in the forum. It can only be carried out by your hosting provider.

Also, please let us know if your website is using Cloudflare, any CDN, or has firewall rules configured. When you reply, kindly include your System Status Report as requested earlier.

Hi, you can access the file directly through a browser so no reason it wouldn’t be accessible?

No CDN on the site, but we use Wordfence.

However, when accessing the link directly in a browser, it displays as hex code instead of JSON. This may indicate that a server-level security feature is interfering. Could you try temporarily disabling Wordfence, disconnecting Square, and then reconnecting to see if it resolves the issue?

Hi there!

Thank you for sharing the system status report everything is appearing fine, However I have checked the log and I can see Square attempted to verify the Apple Pay domain, but when it tried to access, the server responded with:503 Service Unavailable

For testing purposes, could you please contact your hosting provider and ask if there is anything on their end that may be causing this issue?

If not, then for testing purposes, please deactivate all plugins except WooCommerce and the Square plugin, clear your site cache, and see if that works for you.

I will ask the hosting provider for their advice, however you have confirmed yourselves that the url gives a 200 response.

Is there anything we should do in the client’s Square account to ensure Apple Pay is activated? They have had a few orders successfully paid through the Square plugin using cards already.

Thank you for the update and the clarification. At this stage, the issue appears to be between your hosting platform and Square, and it isn’t something we can troubleshoot directly. As mentioned earlier, I received a 200 OK response through the terminal, not through the browser. However, when accessing the URL directly, it displays hex code instead of the expected JSON that should include the 200 OK response. This may also explain why my colleague is seeing a 503 error.

From the observations so far it seems as though there are Firewall from your host or some sort of encryption or blocking preventing Square from verifying your domain for Apple Pay.

I’ve spoken to IONOS and they’ve confirmed nothing on the hosting is automatically blocking they .well-known directory. They suggested it may be something in the .htaccess so I ran that through copilot, that suggested adding the following code to .htaccess which I’ve done, still not validating. I’ve disabled Wordfence that’s not blocking, as I asked previously is there anything additional we need to do in the client’s Square account control panel?

Thank you for the update. You do not need to change anything in the client’s Square account control panel. Since you’ve already checked the hosting side and nothing is blocking the file access, the issue is not related to Square settings.

Regarding my previous response where I mentioned the 503 error — this error is actually coming from the log you shared earlier:

Square is unable to access the domain-association file because your server is returning a 503 (Service Unavailable) instead of the required 200 plain-text response.

Before I escalate this issue, could you please:

Deactivate all plugins except WooCommerce and the Square plugin.
Go to Settings → Permalinks and click “Save Changes” without modifying anything.
Disable Apple Pay and then enable it again.
Share the latest Square log for further assistance.

Let me know once this is done, and I’ll take a closer look.
