Archive dropdown

I have a drop down list where it lists the archives by month. Whenever a selection is made it displays the correct post but the drop down list reverts to the top value ‘By Month’.

Is there anyway I can add ‘selected’ in the <option> tag so it keeps the option which was selected, selected in the drop down?
