Whenever I go to my website for the first time, the first thing that loads is not my website, but this black screen, asking me to verify I’m not a robot before showing me my website

The mobile version does not have this issue, this happens only when new users visit the site desktop version.

How do you get rid of this? I don’t even understand is this a wordpress issue or a hosting issue? Thanks

If you have not installed any plugins for that, thats your webhost doing that for your site protection, you can always ask their support about that.

Thanks, will do! What are they protecting me against and what do I risk by requesting the webhosters to turn it off? To my clients that protection looks a lot like the old “click allow to verify you’re not a robot” scam that installed an extension on the browser, so they will not want to proceed onto my site and I can’t run Pagespeed Insights assesment on my site

This type of protection helps keep attackers away from your WordPress. As a result, they are checked before they come into contact with your website and if the accessing party is classified as a spammer due to various characteristics, their access is denied. The vast majority of accesses of this kind are already rejected by global blacklists, while the captcha you see helps with others. This all serves to ensure the security of your website.

Of course, you don’t have to secure your website in this way. There are numerous security plugins for WordPress, each with its own method to ward off attackers. If your host disables this protection, you should install an alternative. Take a look at this article:
