Does anyone know if it’s possible to assign a custom capability to specific users with this plugin? I can’t seem to find it.

  • This feature is not supported by Members. This is primarily because I was assured by a lead WP developer that WordPress would deprecate/remove it at some point.

Okay thanks. I created a new role and added the custom capability to that role and then added that role to the people who needed that custom capability.

Convoluted, but it works. And probably the more proper way to do it, anyway.

I am going to ask about that in Dev Chat because it’s rare they would make a statement like that unless it’s in the current release path and it’s not in the release notes for 4.9.

You won’t find it any release notes. This was in a private conversation with a lead dev years ago about various things dealing with roles/caps and making sure that Members was on the right path. There are no pushes to make the changes any time in the near future (if they ever do). I’m pretty sure there’s an old Trac ticket.

There’s actually some performance benefits with particular features with caps only belonging to roles.

There’s also some things that you really just don’t want to try (particularly on a large scale) with caps assigned to both roles and users.
