I would like my students to be able to attach files and make them visible so that they can later download them if they want.

Students cannot attach files in Sensei LMS. The media attachments feature is specifically for course creators and instructors to add files to the course or lesson pages.
An alternative could be to get a form where students can have a field to upload files, keeping in mind that sharing those files collectively won’t be automatic.
As a teacher and site admin, you can use the File download lesson pattern to attach files that students can download.
