Author.php does not work at all

I just do not understand how to make this work. I have get_author_profile in the plugins directory of my theme and activated – i go to where my comments are – nothing to click on. I have author.php and even WP-People as well. Do I have to create a third page to make this work?

I simply do not understand – I cant find any coherent installation instructions for the newbie i.e, create this file, place this code here, alter these variables, click here…

As an additional example of what I’m looking to do, just take a look at this page your reading right now. To the left is my nickname and below that it says “member” – click on member and it will take you to a commenter profile page – its exactly what I’m looking for.

Is there a way to do the following:
I want a little user profile page, that’s loaded after clicking on a username from a comment poster.
-> little (pop-up) profile with website, username..
-> for user profiles, not only for author profiles
-> every (registered) user can see the profile of any other registered user.
