Auto increment doesn’t continue from high value

Hi! I changed one of the user IDs on my site to a high number, but when new users sign up their user ID is assigned based on the actual number of users, not the high value I assigned. Do you know why that is, and how I can make the auto increment continue from the high value? Thanks!
