I am unable to “Update automatically” plugins or whatever.
Is it just failing or is it prompting your for FTP userid/password and then working?
If the latter then you would need to adjust the permissions of your files and folders to get it to work.

I get “unable to log onto server…” I have all pertaining permissions set to 775, I even tried 777. It worked fine last week, (and for at least the last 3 years) it only effects the WP ftp utility, my other clients work

If that’s after you put in the FTP userid/passwd then check with yor provider about FTP access. You’re getting denied before the file and directory permissions even become an issue.
Thanks to an older ‘closed’ topic, and a ‘johncolumbo’ here: http://ww.wp.xz.cn/support/topic/automatic-plugin-upgrade-not-working-ftp-problems?replies=47 I have solved my problem… put “localhost” in the “HostName” instead of http://ftp.mydomain.com, weird because the http://ftp.mydomain.com has worked for years.
