• It seems as if the automatic resizing uses the default WP thumbnail/image size settings, and not those I set in Settings->Media.

    For example, it keeps on trying to generate images that are 2048px (1024×2) wide for the “large” image, but I have set mine to 960px, so the generated images should be 1920px wide.

    The plugin actually really using the sizes registered in WordPress, it doesn’t guess or uses it own. You might be using a theme that is overriding a few things or a plugin. I am also using my own media sizes through themes and plugins and wp-retina-2x always pick those media sizes.
