Automatic plugin upgrade requirements

Hello,

every time I’m automatically upgrading my plugins I am asked for ftp data. But I know that it’s due to some server restrictions, on my previous host I didn’t have to do it, plugins just upgraded themselves. What are the server requirements? Which options do I have to activate? I’m running WP on VPS, so there are no restrictions for me to configure it.
