re. alternative for Autoptimize; Fast Velocity Minify is nice, Asset Cleanup is not entirely the same (and can be used with AO) but is nice as well, same for Speed Booster Pack 🙂

* if you are using Autoptimize
* and if in Autoptimize you have image optimization active
* and if for that purpose you have a paying account at Shortpixel (as AO uses the shortpixel image optimization CDN for the image optimization)
then instead of being billed per image optimized you will now be billed for the CDN usage instead.

well, there is a free tier, but as soon as you have used that you will indeed have to register, pay and associate the domain, yes.
so it’s better to change plugins instead of unchecking the box?

no, if you don’t want to pay to have your images optimized simply uncheck the box and you’re good to go 🙂
