For the avatar image that displays under your posts (like “About the Author”), can you upload an image, or do you have to use the gravatar service or something?

You can either use Gravatars:

or search for a plugin to use custom avatars:

https://ww.wp.xz.cn/plugins/search.php?q=avatar

I know there are plugins that allow users the choice of using a Gravatar or a custom uploaded avatar.
