Does this only work with avatars or can it pull in photos uploaded to the user profile?

This call the avatar function in wordpress some if the uploaded photo are over riding the call to gravatar then YES

chack this plugin search http://ww.wp.xz.cn/extend/plugins/search.php?q=local+avatar for option
