When will the plugin be compatible with importing images in .avif format?

This format is much better than .jpg and the plugin does not support importing. Are there any plans to include it?

  • Hi @sonicgyn,

    Thank you for contacting us!

NextGEN Gallery uses the default WP file formats, which means you can create and combine galleries with PNG, JPEG, GIF and WEBP. Currently, we do not have a built-in feature to maximize compatibility with AVIF format. I do agree it would be super helpful, though. I will add your feature request to our list of requests.

I apologize that we can’t provide what you’re looking for right now, but I appreciate the suggestion and any other details you may be able to provide! It’s always helpful to get insights from our users.

    Thanks!

AVIF is already natively supported by WordPress, it just needs to be supported by Nextgen Gallery. And another thing, you said it supported WEBP but even this old format is not supported, only jpg, png and gif.

The print here shows exactly that.

And it would be great if it supported it so that we could send files much smaller than AVIF (for example) than JPG, which is very outdated for use on the web.

    Hi @sonicgyn,

    Thank you for reaching back,

Upon checking further by uploading the WEBP image format on NextGEN Gallery, the image is uploaded successfully without any error. In case this helps, please check the screen recording here.

Could you please upload the images on WordPress Media library and check if it gets uploaded successfully or not! This way we can check if the issue persists with NextGEN Gallery only or overall setup of yours.

Let me know the updates and I will get back to you.

    Thanks!

I don’t send images as you demonstrated in the video, I import the photos. When I saw the message I sent earlier saying that only jpg, png and gif were compatible, I didn’t even try to import the webp images. But I tested it here and I was able to.

So I reiterate my request to make this AVIF format compatible in the future, since WordPress has been natively compatible for some time now, so that I can save space but keep my photos in great quality. I really want this format because my iPhone/iPad users can’t download and put WEBP in the photo gallery, but AVIF does support it.

And if possible, put in the error message that you accept WEBP because it’s not clear when importing/sending, as I demonstrated in the previous print.

    Thanks
