The plugin inserts tracking codes automatically. I already manually added my GA4 tag directly into my theme header file. If I connect this plugin just to view the dashboard stats, will it double-count my traffic with duplicate tags?

Thanks for reaching out. Good question regarding any GA4 tag already added to your themes header file. While Google Analytics can identify and help eliminate duplicate sessions, double tracking could possibly occur. This can depend on your GA4 settings (Admin > Property > Data Streams > [Your Stream] > Configure tag settings > click on your tag name name > Ignore duplicate instances of on-page configuration (recommended)”).

To ensure you are not double tracking, which is indeed possible if you have a manually placed snippet along with a Site Kit placed snippet, Site Kit plugin does feature a Place Google Analytics code option. Toggling this off will mean you can view Analytics data within the Site Kit dashboard, without the plugin placing the code.

Note that you may wish to do the alternative, and remove the manually placed code snippet. This may be the better option as theme files can be overwritten with theme updates, unless you’re using a child theme or Analytics specific setting within your theme configurations, which doesn’t sound like the case.

Note also that Site Kit does let users know of any existing non-Site Kit placed snippet when connecting the Google Analytics module.

Do let me know if you have any questions with the above. Thank you.
