What do you mean, “external image”?
The image doesn’t appear, it just has the words ‘external image’ in grey which you have to click on to see the image.
Is there some way to avoid having this happen?

Right above the button you pressed to post this message, this forum asks you:
Did you include a link to your site, so that others can see the problem?
I haven’t included a link as it’s just a general question. I’ve removed the images that were coming up with this ‘external image’ problem anyway.
Besides I’m not particularly motivated to give a link to my site after reading the other thread related to the problem I’m having:

You don’t even help the guy, you make some judgmental comments about the content of his page lol.
Do you have any advice on avoiding the ‘external image’ problem or is there no way around it?

I still don’t know what you’re talking about with regards to “external image” and if you don’t want to show me what you mean, then I have neither the means nor the desire to help you.
I know this is resolved, but I thought I would provide clarification (especially since this has come up frequently it seems).
On the Tumblr dashboard view for both the desktop website and the mobile app, an “External image” block will appear in place of the actual image when it is hosted on an external site. It seems that this also applies to Tumblr-hosted images that are changed from a possible relative URL to an absolute URL, as our older Tumblr posts that contain Tumblr-hosted images but were edited in WordPress have also changed to show the external image block when viewed in the dashboard. This issue does not come up if you view the Tumblr blog through its proper URL rather than through the dashboard.
Here is a screencap showing you what the issue looks like:

I believe this is an issue on Tumblr’s side, that cannot be changed on the WordPress (or plugin) side. I hope this information will help anyone else who might have the same issue, and is browsing the forums. You should send a support ticket to Tumblr requesting to change this.
