Background Help

Hello everyone. I have looked everywhere for advice on this. My page is displaying the image right under my text with no “white box” to make it readable. At first I tried the just change the CSS as I have the Thesis theme I used the instructions at http://diythemes.com/thesis/rtfm/custom-backgrounds/

No changes to the custom.css worked not even the simple color background. I found no folder for /custom_images in my ftp directory adding one did nothing.

So I downloaded the FULLSCREEN Background image plugin which got the image on there. Now I want to make it more readable something like the one shown at https://premium.wpmudev.org/blog/how-to-properly-add-background-images-to-your-wordpress-site/
