Try deactivating plugins to explore whether any could be responsible.

If you’re using a commercial theme and cannot seek help from the theme’s vendors, try using this plugin instead http://ww.wp.xz.cn/extend/plugins/background-manager/ .

Stranger and stranger. We now uploaded the image as a.gif instead of a jpg, and the problem is gone. The jpg had was 0.98MB, wo well within the upload limit. It is ok now, but I would still like to know if anybody else had this problem, and what causes it/can be done to prevent it.
    thanks
