There are various different plugins that exist nowadays that give options for backing up your site. Some of them are free, some of them cost money.
Some of them will only backup your database while others will backup the database along with all of your files. Most of them can be automated as well to backup once a day, once a week, once a month, etc…
I would just do a search for ‘backup’ in the plugin directory and you’ll find a bunch of results.
Ok, I backed up my database and it’s only 118k
What about all the content that will be changing over time?
I just did an ftp transfer of my root directory to my local disk.
I’m can’t help feeling there is a better way to do it?
I want to be able to restore in one click if possible.
You will have to backup the database each time a new post is created. Which is why I mentioned that some plugins will allow you to do this once a day, once a week and so on.
My changes can be anything from editing a php file to uploading photos.
This can’t be part of the database can it?
Can someone explain to me what the database is compared to the wp-content, wp-admin etc.
Is it possible to backup the entire site at once?
The database stores all of your content, site, plugins, theme, users & profile settings.
So why was the database file less than 1mb?
I followed the WP help exactly for backing up using cpanel.
It stores data very efficiently.

My Wp-content folder alone is over 30mb.
Your uploads themselves are not stored in the database.
First, WP Forum has a wealth of info and very knowledgeable people. The only problem is that you can get so many answers for one question.
Since my site was hacked I’m very paranoid right now and need to get this straight so please bear with me:
I have backed up my wp-content folder (along with all the other wp folders) and I have backed up the database thru cpanel.
If I got hacked again tomorrow, wiped everything and wanted my site to be in the same state the site’s in right now I would have to :
1. Restore the database
2. Restore my content folder
Is that about right?
If generate a full website backup in my cPanel, does this make the database backup redundant?
This is essentially all I need as a backup of my site?
