When a customer orders an item that is backordered on WooCommerce, they still get charged for it.

Would there be a way to accept backorders, but not charge the customer? I do not see an option for that as we only charge our customers for b/o items when they ship.

I am open to using plugins if you have any recommendations.

    Thank you for your help.

    Hello @kleargo!

Customers are normally charged for backorders since with this feature enabled products are in stock. In fact, to allow backorders, the Stock status must be set to In Stock even though the Stock Quantity is 0 or less. This is the expected behavior in WooCommerce.

To me, it sounds like you want to allow pre-orders instead? We have the WooCommerce Pre-Orders extension in the marketplace that allows charging customers by setting an optional date and time when the pre-order will be available.

Feel free to take a look at this extension and its documentation:

    https://woocommerce.com/document/pre-orders/

You can make the most out of the WooCommerce.com 30-day refund policy to try the extension first and make sure it works for you. If you find it doesn’t do what you want, you can get a full refund.

    Hope this helps.
