• I have a general question. I want to upload the newest version of WordPress, but have to make a backup first.

I had another website earlier, for which I installed a backup plugin, but now I realize I never used it properly. I installed it and that was all I did. I had no idea where it was storing information, but I thought I could always call my host or something to ask them where my data went.

So now with a newer website, I installed another backup plugin, this time one that uses Dropbox. I actually changed the settings of when it will make a backup of my files, and gave the plugin authority to access my Dropbox. I see that the files are now showing up on my Dropbox.

But now my question: why is it backing up plugins? If I would lose all information on my website, couldn’t I just get the plugins again? That sounds easier than trying to get the backed up files back on my website again. Also, why don’t I just get some sort of a word-file with all my text copied and pasted in it? I don’t understand why backups have to be so user unfriendly, unless you actually know something about data storage, computers and files etc. Is there any backup plugin that actually backsup just the text I have written for my website. That’s really all I need anyways.

Each backup plugin is different, but you’ll always need to do more than just install and activate it. They each have settings you can configure to decide what and where to backup.

Other methods of backup are detailed at https://codex.ww.wp.xz.cn/WordPress_Backups

Unless you have modified your plugin files, you don’t need to back them up.

Because then your method of restoring would be a nightmare of copying and pasting every single post as a new one, compared to just restoring the entire database backup at the push of one (maybe two) buttons.

You can export just your site content via Tools -> Export in your blog’s Dashboard.
