I installed the plugin and the Backup Now button is greyed out, so I can’t click it to start a backup.

I went down to advanced settings, and the backup directory it is trying to use (default setting) is: wp-content/updraft

So I contacted my IT team and asked them to create the updraft folder underneath wp-content and make it writable.

They said they did, but when I go to click on “Click here to attempt to create the directory and set the permissions,”

    I get this:

Backup directory could not be created…

The request to the filesystem to create the directory failed.

Now this could be my IT team did something wrong, or something is up with the plugin. I dunno.

If its the IT team, can you give me some things to ask for them to look for? Like does the wp-content folder need to fully writable too? I was assuming it was from the original setup of site.

If its the plugin, can you please help me troubleshoot?

Under “expert settings” I didn’t mess with anything, so none of those SSL boxes are checked. Here is the debug info it shows:

    Web server: Apache/2.2.15 (CentOS) (Linux 360-Portals64-1.360training.com 2.6.32-358.14.1.el6.x86_64 #1 SMP Tue Jul 16 23:51:20 UTC 2013 x86_64)

    Site is at: http://www.360institute.com/my360/

(Also I set it up to copy to Google Drive, I’m not an IT novice so I feel sure I set that up okay, but I don’t think that has anything to do with this problem.)

I just want to backup the site so I can update the theme I’m using!

Thank you in advance for your time!

    Hi ms360,

I didn’t understand part of that – if your IT team created the directory manually, then why were you also then clicking on the button to create it too? Did they create it successfully or not?

Basically, if the button is greyed out, then the directory does not exist in a writable form, and if pressing the button within UD does not do it for you, then your IT admins will be able to do it manually, so you should ask them to do so.

Yeah they said it is done I mean I figured it wasn’t a complicated task, they are in Pakistan but I don’t think anything got lost in translation. I’m just perplexed what to do next to troubleshoot

When you press the button to create in UD, it tries every strategy it can think of. If none work, then your web hosting space is basically set up to make it impossible without the server admin making it possible. You’ll need to get this fixed – there are many + various plugins that want to create a directory in wp-content.

Okay, I’ll get back with the IT team though I’m not sure what to ask them to look for, we will see. If you have any tips to pass along for what I should ask them to look at let me know, like you mentioned there are other plugins that want to create folders underneath wp-content so I’d like to get a one-stop solution in place. Thanks again for your time.

Real quick: Can you tell me why the backup now button is greyed out? Is it because of this directory issue? I can’t click on it, but restore and configuration buttons are not greyed out and seem to work fine

Yes. The directory is not writable; therefore UD has no usable temporary space to use to create new backups in.
