No, I was wondering if the latest updated CAUSED the problem, because my last successful update was at version 1.6.8.

The latest update of the plugin could not cause an issue like that.
May we kindly ask you to clear the cache of the browser or else try to use the plugin with the incognito mode of the browser and let us know, if the issue persists?
Also, you can try to reinstall the plugin.

The backup still isn’t working. Have purged browser cache, hosting cache, tried different browsers and computers, and tried other sites hosted on the same server (through siteground.) All having problems. Interestingly, when I delete the plugin and reinstall it, it shows the aborted old backup attempts as “successful” but a 0 MB size.

I have tried incognito along with everything else. Still not working on any of my sites. Will send email. I see someone else is having this problem who is also hosting at siteground, as I am (sites not at siteground continue to work.)
