• Hi All,

I recently started a blog at WordPress.com and shortly after a self-hosted one with ww.wp.xz.cn. I really like the .org’s independence and control, but I also like the .com’s active community, views, and comments.

My plan was to run two duplicate blogs (.org and .com) until my .com gains a larger following, then migrate my followers over to the .org site. At that point, I can shut down the .com site.

The problem is, I’ve read that having duplicate content is bad for SEO, which can result in both sights being penalized in search rankings and hits.

If the SEO penalty is true, how can I solve this problem? I appreciate any comments.

Duplicate content is *very* bad for SEO, bad enough that both could be removed from the index entirely.

If you want to stick with .com, stay there and delete the .org site. If you want to stay on .org, make the .com site private via Settings -> Reading in the .com blog’s Dashboard (this is not available as a direct setting on .org blogs).

Thanks for the response. I guess I can’t have my cake and eat it.

What if only only duplicated 1 of every 10 blog posts, so that I can at least drive some visibility from the .com to the .org? I guess that might still be taunting the SEO gods…

In the WordPress.com settings, there is also an option to “discourage search engines from indexing this site”. Would this be a good middle ground? I would tell search engines not to index my .com site, so only my .org site will be index. Then can I continue duplicating content without penalty?

The penalty applies to the entire site, so that would still be a terrible idea.

You can migrate your followers when you’re ready to move to .org, so there’s no reason to “drive some visibility from the .com to the .org” if they’re the same site.

They won’t index the hidden site, but that just means they’ll give all the penalties to the visible site.
