does this mean it blocks them from ever making a comment, or the comment is then sent to spam?

You can mark them as spam or you can delete them immediately:

And you can delete the spam after some time:

If it’s the latter, is there value in using Antispam Bee with Akismet, or is that redundant?

I don’t think it is necessary to have both installed, but if you have a massive spam problem this could be the case, so yes, both plugins should be playing well together. They are using different approaches.

The honeypot feature is the best tool in our toolbox, our patterns are using just a small set of bad words. Akismet is a self-learning tool which is based on big data and has no honeypot feature.

I would recommend to test this setup, before using it on a production site, but in theory it should be working.

Please report back if you are using this setup! Always interesting to know if things are working well …
