I’m sorry you had a negative experience here.
We price the plugins in a way that is sustainable for the ecosystem and allows for us to continue to provide full support and add features to the plugin. Over 60% of the plugins on the repository are abandoned or unsupported because their authors don’t charge enough to allow them to continue basic support or feature enhancement, but we’re not like this. Since 2012, we’ve been providing high quality support and enhancements and plan to continue doing so for the foreseeable future. It’s impossible to provide things like documentation, email support and ongoing feature development for free as we need to support ourselves too…
Many other high quality themes and plugins have similar pricing as well (Gravity Forms, Easy Digital Downloads, Ninja Forms, WP Simple Pay, and us to name a few). We’re a good fit for those who value high quality support and documentation, but understand that we don’t fit in everyone’s budget.
We’ll have to agree to disagree about the “usable” part. The core plugin for BD is fully functional and has the capability to accept paid or free listings with many features documented here. We have optional premium modules that allow you to add on advanced features, but the directory functions on its own without them.
