• Have chosen a theme and downloaded onto my IMAC OS 10 leopard. I go to http://thetroublewithwisdom.com/wordpress/wp-admin/theme-uploader.php and press – chose file – to upload. That brings me to my Finder (all files and folders) I select folder of the theme (I have tried getting it straight from the downloads or placed it on the desktop) AND the choose button in the drop down window of the wordpress theme uploader is NOT HOT. Is seems to never be hot for a folder, only for individual files. But my host says to just upload the folder. I don’t expect I should upload each little file in the theme, right? Any ideas? (I also, through reading this forum, wondered if they had to be unzipped first, but when they are dropped onto the stuffit/expander icon the dialogue window says that the file need not be unzipped or is the wrong file.) Weary of this go round.

  • Hi

Yes, you have to unzip the theme. The theme will then be in a folder. You upload the entire theme folder into WP folder /wp-content/themes/

If you are having trouble the way you are doing it, either use an FTP program, or else use the file manager in your webhosting control panel to upload the folder from your Mac to the webserver. Again, do not upload the zip file – extract the folder to your desktop (or somewhere) and upload the extracted folder. you do upload “every single file in the theme” but all at once, inside that theme’s folder.

Hi stvwlf, I appreciate your work on my behalf BUT. . .
I’m having Multiple Insults Pursuing Uploads
When dragging/dropping theme folder onto stuffit expander the following winder appears : “An error occurred attempting to expand/Users/newmoon/Downloads/anonymous-elegance
A folder was specified when a file was required (error #17530)”

When the folder is opened and a file drag/dropped, this window appears:
    “Unable to determine file format
The file “/Users/newmoon/Downloads/anonymous-elegance/archive.php” does not appear to be compressed or encoded. It is advised that you obtain further information about the contents of this file from the sender or provider of the file.”
So doesn’t this mean that the files are NOT compressed???

In addition, when connecting to host via FTP (Fetch) doggie runs until the following message appears: “An FTP connection to dotster.com could not be opened because the connection timed out.”
I am on a dial=up connection. Could this be caused by that? My former computer -older MAC -never had this trouble connecting.

    1) What happens if you just double click on the theme zip file you downloaded? You shouldn’t need to do any dragging.

    2) After you get the theme folder extracted from the zip file, use your web control panel file manager and upload it that way. That eliminates any issues using an FTP program.

The dialup doesn’t help, but most theme folders are pretty small so should not be an obstacle.

If I download a theme, then open download folder and double click the theme folder, all the theme files appear. (I have been doing that much.) Then if I go to theme uploader and chose file I CAN select one individual file (upload button IS hot.) But having tried to upload, I get the following message: “Can’t unpack zip-file: PCLZIP_ERR_BAD_FORMAT (-10) : Unable to find End of Central Dir Record signature Please try again.” So is it NOT unzipped? Still, if I try to upload the whole theme file, the upload button is NOT hot, so no options there.
As to you second point I don’t know what the web control panel file manager is and my help on MAC OS 10 doesn’t know either. Is it a separate application? How do I access it?

    Hi –

    1) In order to have a website you must have a hosting account.

    2) All hosting accounts come with a control panel. If you don’t know how to access the control panel, contact your webhost or check their site for support info.

    3) Within that control panel is a file manager. It works the opposite of your FTP program. The FTP program runs on your computer and in effect PUSHES the files from your computer to the server.

The control panel file manager runs on the server, and in effect allows you to PULL the files, from your Mac to the server.

I am not a Mac person – here is a very short tutorial I found on Google on how to unzip a zip file on a Mac
Extract a Zip file in Mac OS X

Unzipping files in Mac OS X:
    1. Open “Finder” and navigate to the Zip file you wish to unzip.
    2. Double-click the file you wish to unzip.
The files contained within the Zip file should now be automatically unzipped into the same folder as the original Zip file.

Here is a free unzipper Mac prog I located
