I’m missing something basic. I’ve set up my site on localhost and selected the twenty twenty-three theme. I’ve made various modifications and things look good. However, I’m getting stuck modifying the single-post template.

I want to add a subtitle after the title. In the template, I inserted something after the title to hold this but it doesn’t show up when I go to add a post. What am I missing?

Hi @408wij – it sounds like what you’re hoping to do is add an extra ‘subtitle’ field to use when editing posts – is that correct?

Unfortunately, that’s not how those templates work (at the moment). Whilst the Post Title block does exist – there aren’t other blocks to create corresponding fields within the post editor. If you added a subtitle ‘heading’ to the single-post template – whatever text you place in it would be shown on all posts.

@jordesign, thanks! I would like to be as bog standard as possible. Are there widely used default templates that provide this?

Hey @408wij! This is not something that a template/theme would usually provide. However, you could misuse the post excerpt for this(which might not be the best option for SEO). I have some screenshots below which show how this would work.

Template editor showing the post excerpt block added
Post editor showing title, content, and excerpt
Published post showing title, excerpt, and content

Ideally, a plugin like this subtitle plugin could be used, and you can insert a custom subtitle block in your template, using something like the Lazy blocks plugin.

@properlypurple: Thanks. Is there a proper way for me to do this? Should I be creating a template or theme from scratch? I ask because I’d like to add elements other than the subtitle.

@408wij You don’t have to create a theme from scratch, but using something like Lazy Blocks or ACF blocks should work for creating custom blocks, that you can add to various parts of your templates.
