Blocks as searchable objects from the front end

Currently, search or filter-by-category search utilities for the front end show post types and possibly media in search results. Since media items don’t by default have categories, one can’t use a filter-by-category search on PDF media from the front end (but let me know if this exists somewhere!). Basically, we want PDFs to show up in a category filter search on the front end.
Since Gutenberg essentially creates blocks as separate objects on a page, I’m wondering if there is a) a way to apply categories to blocks and b) perhaps tick a box on a block that allows it as an object that can be discovered via search on the front end.
Is there a way to do this currently, or is it planned for later development?
