• First I appreciate all the work volunteers do to respond to WP forum questions. however I’ve noticed a trend in responses to posts.

I usually get an immediate response to a problem I have however this is almost a completely unhelpful response. It often consists of something like have you seen article NNN?

However in my initial post I usually state what I’ve tried and if anyone read reply NNN in detail, they’d see that it was not helpful. I usually respond saying that I have read that topic before posting and it wasn’t helpful.

Then I don’t get any other replies for days: usually never.

It seems there is a competition to reply to a question as soon as possible: even if the reply is not helpful. Then the original question gets marked “replied to” and is never touched again. I am aware that you do not want users to “bump” their posts but this trend makes it appealing to do so. Otherwise the question never gets a single “real” response

looking at your (very few) recent topics of the last year, there is not much evidence to support this claim.

and your latest topic is only about one hour old …

please stay optimistic and allow some more time to get replies to your topic.

Thanks for establishing that. πŸ˜‰ It was hard to tell that from your topic title.

They’re not “Blowoff Replies to Posts”. Those replies are genuine responses from people trying to help you out of a jam.

I usually get an immediate response to a problem I have however this is almost a completely unhelpful response. It often consists of something like have you seen article NNN?

How is that an unhelpful response? As alchymyth said, looking at your topics does not support that statement.

Bumps get deleted. Sorry, but that’s how it is. If everyone bumped then nothing would get accomplished. Also many of the more experienced volunteers do use the no replies link.

Bumping ruins that and that’s why bumps get deleted when found.

Put it in a different light. Like you, we are all volunteers. How many topics have you helped out in? You can help improve the responses by getting involved too.

Technically the only thing that I can help in are image maps. I did have a query on this subject abt 6 mos ago & after I found the answer I documented it in my followup to my post.

I think alchymyth has the point in which you’re not waiting long enough for replies. People don’t have to reply with the solution the first time round. Forums make it easy to discuss what you have and haven’t tried, and debug things step by step.

Okay, it’s been a month now & I am not aware of any more answers to my question. As mentioned I got a reply in 15 minutes of my post which just tagged it as “replied to”. That reply was completely unhelpful.

Now 1 month later, there have been no additional replies. While I haven’t posted a large # of questions this has happened in exactly the same manner to 2 of 2 questions posted. An immediate reply (within an hour or so) which doesn’t answer or even look at the question in detail and nothing more ever again.

Perhaps I should wait a year instead of a month for a reply?

I think a correction to the board, allowing the questioner to mark if there has been a useful response would be better. I’d even pay $ from my PayPal account for a useful response. However some mechanism seems to be rewarding people for making immediate 1st response replies, even when those replies are not useful.

Wouldn’t it be better to hire someone instead? Since you’re willing to pay

I don’t think the problem will go away because it’s a consequence of using volunteer-driven support – which is what the forums are based on. If you change that by providing a source of income then you’re changing everything. There are already paid support services out there, i.e. CodePoet and WPJobs. I would encourage you to use them.

Well actually I do hire people, I employ one guy I found under my WP expert and have used him off & on for about the past 5 years.

The site about which I post here the link doesn’t show up.

This is a non-profit /educational site and it’s hundreds of html pages + a few WordPress pages. My budget for it isn’t too high. Thus I like to use the paid guy above to set up a complex thing the 1st time and then try to follow his templates & complete the more simple things myself.

Also due to constant additions/ revisions/ I prefer having a website I can control rather than something where I can’t change anything. Thus paid work doesn’t completely replace working on it myself, but rather supplements it.

However I’ll try to find areas in which I can help. As mentioned I can help some people with image maps. Also when I eventually find a solution to my problem I write it and close the case. I know this is a volunteer driven site, but I’m wondering about the mechanism of connecting people who want to help with people who have questions.

As this topic was started 10 months ago and resurrecting it is considered bad form, I’m going to close this topic now.

If you still having a problem 8 month later please start a new support topic with your details there.
