Bluehost Subdirectory 404

    Hello,

    I have a WordPress installation on Bluehost at members.planetwendi.com. When you add a subdomain in Bluehost it puts the domain in a subdirectory (in this case planetwendi.com/members).

    I have a need to use planetwendi.com/members as a link, but wordpress gives a 404 error when trying to access this page. It should be the same as members.planetwendi.com because they both go to the same folder.

    I tried creating a redirect as index.html that went to members.planetwendi.com. This doesn’t work because the redirect links to itself and becomes a loop.

    Is there a place I can put a redirect, or some setting I can change so that I can direct people to planetwendi.com/members as well as members.planetwendi.com?

    First, let me admit, I hate it when people ask why…but I have to ask, WHY? Either go with a subdomain or subdirectory.

    We just launched this site, and some of our affilaites and promoters have a need for an address that doesn’t use a subdomain. I have been assigned the task of making the site work both ways.

    Do you have any ides?

    First change your WordPress and Blog URL’s to use the /members link instead of the subdomain members.

    Then try creating a redirect using the Redirects tool in the cPanel to redirect it from members.planetwendi.com to planetwendi.com … to be honest, I’m not really sure how the cPanel writes the redirect, so it may utterly fail, in which case I found this article on BlueHost that essentially describes how you can do it yourself: http://helpdesk.bluehost.com/index.php/kb/article/000347

    It is written in the context of the main account domain using a different subfolder, but it applies in basically the same way for an addon domain, if that is what you are dealing with.

    Let me know if that works.

    From what I gathered he is not dealing with an addon domain…it’s a subdomain/subdirectory issue.

    Thanks! In Bluehost it lists the domain as an addon domain. I will try this and let you know if it works.

    While I am trying your method, I found a temporary solution.
    I edited the 404 page code to redirect to members.planetwendi.com.

    In Bluehost it lists the domain as an addon domain.

    My bad then. I thought an addon domain was when you had one hosting account like widgets.com and then you created a subdirectory there, such as widgets.com/gadgets and then you could set gadgets.com to resolve to that subdirectory and it looks like a completely separate account at gadgets.com — in effect, having one hosting account and hosting two (or more) separate domains on that single hosting account.

    A subdomain and subdirectory can also be setup to redirect to any accessible chosen location as well.
    I also understand an addon domain to be as you said, figaro. 🙂 People use ‘subdomain’ and ‘addon domain’ interchangeably sometimes. I think this time it was a referral to a subdomain of an addon domain, or at least that is what I had assumed to be a possibility.
