    Sorry, have to agree here.
    Wordpress 3.8.3, trying to disable portfolio category base, effect – nothing changes.

    The plugin has some issues with removing taxonomies bases, please try Remove Category Base plugin or a similar plugin and disable remove category base in WP htaccess Control.
