    Hi
Does your plugin optimise *every* media file uploaded or just those in the media library?
I am using BuddyBoss platform with BuddyX Pro theme and would like images posted onto the Community news/activity feed to be optimised.

    Hi jasperdemann,

If BuddyBoss is uploading images to folders that are not the standard WordPress ones (/wp-content/uploads/), I’m afraid that reSmush.it won’t optimize those. I would recommend you switching to ShortPixel Image Optimizer, there you can add custom folders to the optimization πŸ™‚

    Cheers!

I’ve just checked the location of the BB uploads, and it seems that they go to files/public_html/community/wp-content/uploads/bb_medias/2025/
That would mean they’ll be optimised, I think?
If so, is there a way to check within the plugin for optimised files?

    Hey jasperdemann,

No, they won’t be optimized because they are still outside the standard WordPress uploads folders (the bb_medias folder is not one of them). Please do try ShortPixel Image Optimizer if you would like to have those optimized πŸ™‚

    Cheers!

    Okay, thanks for that.
The thing that’s confusing me is that I ran a test a few days ago where I uploaded an image sized 3.5MB, and when I checked its size from the live Community page, it was only 40KB!
BuddyBoss have told me the platform doesn’t optimise images and BuddyX Pro theme doesn’t, so I guess it must be happening through WP somehow?
Also, in the reSmush.it Dashboard it’s telling me:

    Optimized images (including thumbnails): 150/150

    Total optimized images: 258

I’ve counted the images that are in all the media files in my system, and that number seems about right!

    Hi @jasperdemann,

I’m not really sure what happened there, to be honest. Could you make a quick test?

    1. Deactivate reSmush.it
    2. Upload an image
    3. Wait a couple of minutes
    4. See if it gets optimized
    5. Activate reSmush.it
    6. Do steps 2 to 4 again

    What’s the result?

    (@jasperdemann)

Okay, I think I’ve worked out what’s happening now….part of it, anyway!
    I deactivated reSmush.it.
At that point, in ‘Settings’, there were 150/150 Optimised Images and 261 Total Optimised Images.
I only have 5 images in my WP Media Library.
I uploaded an image of 3.48MB to the Community page (which is a subdomain).
Looking in Inspect > Elements, it was immediately optimised to 22.1KB.
I then reactivated reSmush.it and uploaded another image of 2.76MB, which again was immediately optimised (76.4KB).
I have a cron job set to run reSmush.it every 10 minutes.
Once it had run, this time in ‘Settings’ there were 240/240 Optimised Images and 293 Total Optimised Images.
So it looks like, somehow, reSmush.it isn’t actually optimising the images, but it’s showing that it has in ‘Settings’.
BuddyBoss stores multiple copies of every uploaded image to suit each viewers device, so I think the 261 to 293 change could be in the ballpark but I reckon the 150 to 240 jump is way out.
I use LiteSpeed on both my main site and the Community in the subdomain, but I have Image Optimisation turned off in the subdomain.
As both BuddyBoss Platform and BuddyXPro theme don’t optimise images, and reSmush.it was deactivated, then either WP must be doing it, even though the images aren’t in the Media Library, or LiteSpeed must be doing it, even though it’s turned off.

Thanks, jasperdemann, for running those test.

Maybe you can get in touch with the LiteSpeed Cache team, show them your settings and ask them to confirm whether your images are being optimized by them?

The only other option I can think of is that what you are actually checking is a thumbnail, not the original size. So it looks like the image is optimized, but in reality we are talking about the thumbnail that WordPress creates. Maybe you can send us the URL of the image that is supposedly optimized?

    Thank you.

    Okay, thanks.
I’m pretty new to this, so I’m still learning!

    For example, this image:
    https://community.vital50plus.com/bb-media-preview/Zm9yYmlkZGVuXzI2NjI=/Zm9yYmlkZGVuXzg=/bb-media-photos-popup-image
I can see 5 different copies of it in files/public_html/community/wp-content/uploads/bb_medias/2025/03/
The original I downloaded is 2.76MB, and the largest in that folder is 1.65MB. In ‘Inspect’ it says it’s 76.4KB.
I can’t see the folder ‘bb-media-preview’ anywhere in my file browser!

To be honest, it’s the first time I see this; looks like we are all learning new things πŸ™‚

I just thought: Maybe you can just get in touch with the bbPress team? They should be able to tell you what that folder is. And I’m pretty sure the image size could be related to that.
