…. So, if I click the name if the topic it points to the correct response (no problem there) it’s just that the name being referenced in the Buddypress update is the topic author instead of the one who responded.

Okay, here’s an example of the issue:
On the Buddypress sitewide activity it says “sfepa voted up to a reply by achiledus in the topic I can’t import sound 6 hours, 59 minutes ago”
When I click the URL the associated reply is by Jack Armstrong, see http://www.pencil2d.org/forums/topic/i-cant-import-sound/#post-26853
So, surely the Buddypress activity should have said “sfepa voted up to a reply by Jack Armstrong in the topic I can’t import sound 6 hours, 59 minutes ago”?
Just checking if you still can’t replicate this?
