I received a notice from SiteGround, our web host, that we were exceeding process calls they refer to as CPU Seconds and that our site would be throttled if we ran out of our allotment. I spoke with their tech support about the situation and they pulled our site logs. The technician had the following comment:

“In 9/10 of the cases, especially considering the most executed pages : mitchellcountync.gov/wp-admin/admin-ajax.php and mitchellcountync.gov/calendar/ . This is happening from a plugin, so the cron job setup should help to balance this load, where in the meantime you can reach the calendar plugin creator to advise you on adjustments to reduce the number of queries their plugin executes.”

He suggested that MyCalendar was making a lot of those process calls and suggested I reach out to you to see what might be causing this issue. I have just the base install on the site and have made no modifications to it. Here us the information I copied from the plug-in support area:

Could you help troubleshoot why the calendar would be making so many calls to trigger the warning from SiteGround?

I suggest using something like Query Monitor to see what calls are being made heavily on that page. My Calendar itself doesn’t generally make a particularly high number of calls under normal operation, so I don’t have any immediate suggestions. However, if there are plugins adding actions to post content, that can potentially increase the load fairly significantly.

Another thing is that if all your calendar page loads are hitting the same page, then you’ll have a very high number of hits against that URL. Since you’re not using pretty permalinks (My Calendar > Settings > General), every My Calendar load is going to be on that URL. If you enable pretty permalinks, some of those loads will end up elsewhere. This might help give you better data about how your site is using processes.

Are you still having this issue?

Joe, I ended up blocking the Facebook and Amazon bots and the traffic calls on the site seem to have settled down. The only thing I can figure is that they were crawling our calendar incessantly for some reason but it seems that things have been taken care of for the time being.
