Can I integrate location categories?

I know how to register a new taxonomy for an existing post type, so I can create ‘Location types’ if I want. I also know I can make event-categories available for the location post type. I have tried both of these things.

However, I would like to organize my locations into categories and use this with the existing Events Manager functionality. For example, I’d like to group locations by category when I output a list of locations, or a map of locations, and I would like to use the advanced search functionality for categories, but use this for locations instead of events.

For this project, I’m barely using events at all, and mostly using this plugin as a locations manager. Is there any way I can make the category functionality available for locations?
