can theme already be modified?

    I have already made some modifications to my theme before i realized i needed to create a child theme.

    I installed your plugin and just used it and it caused some minor changes to the background that i had changed and a few other things.

    Should i use your plugin with the theme unchanged in its original, unmodified state first?
