    I received an auto email on Wednesday (5 days ago) that “Your site at http://www.clothbooksforbaby.com has been updated automatically to WordPress 4.4.5.”

    I get them all the time so I ignored it, but checked my site today and the CSS/template wasn’t loading, just unformatted text, and I can’t access WP-admin, firefox page error says “The page isn’t redirecting properly”.

    I logged into my site via cPanel and checked out the index.php file and it had 195kb worth of junk like…

    <?php @'$
    x1=2097
    x2=12458
    x3=
    x4=
    x5=PhKhORyxirnmnqOensGW
    x6=disinfectant,vividly,quicksand,rainfall,trouble,saline,afraid,succulent,third,scarf,megalomania,rem,points,conversational,emphatic,statistics,tanzania,reprisal,tautology,mottled,disparity,dissimilar,wrought,liquefy,burn,guest,runner,enormous,advertisement,expiration,navigate,sibilant,missing,overdo,moreover,hail,tomb,maximum,sponsorship,profundity
    x7=smode,limn,disconnection,admiration,pluck,pakistani,reorganize,mississippi,disarm,punish
    x8=<meta name="google-site-verification" content="7V_PMBR2zmD6ixct6HnmkElLmQQkk88OW2E3Jj7U8R0" />

    I deleted it, leaving the standard wordpress index.php page but it hasn’t had any effect.

    Not sure what else to do. Would love to turn back the clock but not sure how to do that if I can’t access admin.

    Any ideas please?

    Things I’ve tried
    – clearing history & cache & cookies & restarting browser
    – changing default template to twentyfifteen via phpmyadmin
    (can’t access ftp so can’t upload 2016 theme)
    – deactivating plugins via phpmyadmin (Change the option_value field to: a:0:{})

    Still can’t access wp-admin page and home page still looks awful.

    – Try MANUALLY updating to WP version 4.6.1. Download a fresh copy of the WordPress .zip file to your computer, unzip it, and use that to copy up all files and folders EXCEPT the wp-config.php file and the /wp-content/ directory. You may need to delete the old wp-admin and wp-includes folders and files on your server before uploading the new ones. Please read the Manual Update directions first.
    Backup: If you haven’t already done, always backup everything (including your database) before doing any actions, just in case something really goes wrong. You can never have enough backups!

    Thanks Tara! I’ve downloaded a fresh copy of WP and have a mysql backup of the database. I just need to get FTP on to my current PC so I can transfer all the files. As an aside, yesterday I also tried installing WP via my cPanel into a subfolder and I was met with errors so maybe this is a host issue. I’m messaging the host support crew to try figure out what’s going on.

    Resolved by the host support crew rolling back the site to a previously saved copy.
