If the site is in maintenance mode, check it doesn’t stop traffic in/out for the site/REST API too during that time or that the plugin you’re using to enable it doesn’t appear on our list of conflicts: https://www.wordfence.com/help/advanced/plugin-theme-conflicts/#known-plugin-conflicts
There can be issues when the license key is over 24 hours old, or under some other circumstances. You may have already tried some troubleshooting, but the video and steps on this page could help in case you’ve been doing any of the process differently up until now: https://www.wordfence.com/help/api-key/#installing-your-free-license-key
If none of those steps seem to help, it might be helpful to rule out a plugin conflict by disabling all plugins except for Wordfence temporarily, and trying to paste the license key again. If it works, another plugin might have been affecting our scripts on that page.
