If you want to edit a theme, normally you would use the style.css file and possibly header.php and footer.php.
Unless you have a theme that makes editing easy like Flexibility and others it is not necessarily a good path for a beginner.

If you can’t see it you most likely do not. Some themes have a readme.html or the like to tell you how to install the theme. You theme could have used an intro.html. What theme is it?

If you just want to take a theme and run with-it it is easy. The more you wnat to change the more dificult it is. That is why you pick a theme very close to what you want as far as sidebar, size, etc.
