After changing my password I cannot login to my wordpress site. This is not down to me getting the new password wrong. If I deactivate Wordfence then change password I can login into the site with no problems at all and do so several times. If I activate Wordfence again and quit WordPress and then try to log back in I get the “ERROR: An error was encountered while trying to authenticate. Please try again.” message

Hi @clamdigger63, thanks for your question.

The error message you’re seeing is usually presented when the first AJAX check to admin-ajax.php fails before signing in with 2FA.

If you don’t have 2FA enabled, I think a Javascript conflict is causing our first-stage authentication code to fire by mistake. When inspecting the browser console on the login page, are there any red errors or failed script/page loads reported?

If you see errors, or you DO have 2FA enabled, you could try disabling all plugins except for Wordfence and try again. You could also try switching to a default theme such as Twenty Twenty during this time as themes can also cause script conflicts. If you’re able to log in successfully with just Wordfence enabled, reactivate each of your other plugins until the error reappears, identifying the troublemaker.

If you want to use screenshots to illustrate any persistent errors directly, please try Snipboard which will provide you with links to paste here for me. I can help you interpret them and see how to move forward.

    Thanks,

    Peter.
