I have installed Twenty Fourteen Theme here http://www.mummersmardigras.com/blog/ and I get the following message as soon as I add one more post as featured.

Fatal error: Cannot run code from this file in conjunction with non encoded files in/home/mummers/public_html/blog/wp-content/themes/twentyfourteen/content-featured-post.php on line 443

This is a default Twenty Fourteen Theme with some very minor css edits.

Another strange behavior is that if I add another standard post (non featured), my navigation menus go blank.

If needed I can share my wordpress admin details

Re-upload a fresh, unpacked, copy of the Twenty Fourteen folder to wp-content/themes using FTP or whatever file management application your host provides.

    Hi,
Thanks for the prompt response. I did as suggested and still the same result.
Just so you can see the error, I have 3 posts enabled now, 2 are featured and 1 is not.

    Check here: http://www.mummersmardigras.com/blog/

You would see both the conjuction error and the left nav disappearing entirely.

Have you asked your hosts about this? Are you uploading all theme files in ASCII format?

I will speak to my hosts and see if they can find a solution.

Ok, the issue is resolved, it was indeed a hosting configuration. I was hosted with host gator. Below is there response.

This is just a brief note to inform you that we have resolved the issue with your WordPress blog. The issue centered around the use of the zend optimizer. Zend is incompatible with APC and this was causing the conflict on your page. We commented out the Zend statement in your php.ini file and blog was able to resolve correctly.
