I am trying to have my website verified by Google Search Console. One method suggested by an article in WPbeginner is to upload the html file for my website produced by Search Console when setting it up into a File block in a page of my website. I cannot see how to do that. I download the html file then after opening a File Block and clicking Upload then selecting and opening the html file nothing happens. I just get returned to the page with the file block. What am I missing?

You upload the google verification HTML file via FTP or the file manager app of your hosting control panel into the root of the WordPress installation. You do not upload it from within wordpress.

Thank you for such a quick reply – I am in the UK so that’s why I took overnight here to respond.
I was hoping not to have to learn to use any FTP software.
Here is the link to the article referred to by wpbeginner that I was being guided by.
    https://kinsta.com/knowledgebase/how-to-upload-html-file-to-wordpress/
The text there says the following:
“You’ll need nothing more than the backend of your website and an HTML template to complete this process since you’ll be uploading the HTML file directly through a post, page, or the Media Library.
To upload an HTML file through a post or page, insert a ‘File’ block in the Gutenberg Editor. Then, click Upload to upload the HTML file.
Choose the HTML file you want to upload and then click Insert into post. Doing this inserts the link of the file into the post or page and automatically saves it to your Media Library.”
    Is this advice wrong?

That’s not how you upload the auth file for Google. Use the procedure I outlined. You can use your hosting control panel if you don’t want to configure an FTP program.

Thank you I’ve now done that.
