Cant access editor

I am trying to access my editor and I keep getting a balnk screen with this notification. “Sorry, can’t edit files with “..” in the name. If you are trying to edit a file in your WordPress home directory, you can just type the name of the file in.” What does that mean and why cant I access my appearance < editor? thanks!
