    Hi amaunsworth
The ‘upgrade’ instructions are pretty old actually. It was just for users who were using and old version, and updated to later version. They needed to run the upgrade to build the new database structure.
But if you are fresh installing the plugin, just activating it will build the database stuff fine.

I assume you have the plugin activated on your site. Do you see the “NGG Custom Fields” menu item in the dashboard on the left menu? If so, are you able to add custom fields to galleries and/or images? Do those custom fields show up in the ‘manage gallery’ page in NGG? If all of that is happening, you just need to add the tag described in the FAQ to the /wp-content/plugins/nextgen-gallery/view/gallery.php file as described in the FAQ.

Let me know how that goes, and if you have any more problems 🙂

That is very strange. Can you send me a mail to shaunalberts AT gmail DOT com. I would like to get temporary access to have a look if I can.

Just to close this for any who comes across it later. amaunsworth had installed “Advanced Custom Fields – NextGEN Gallery Field add-on”, not “Nextgen Gallery Custom Fields”.
Who even knew there was another custom fields plugin 🙂
